Getting around Hua Hin is straightforward once you know your options. The town is compact enough to navigate without a car if you live centrally, but having your own transport, particularly a motorbike or scooter, makes daily life significantly easier and opens up the wider area.

Songthaews (Shared Trucks)

Songthaews are converted pickup trucks with bench seating in the back. They run fixed routes around Hua Hin and are the cheapest form of local transport at 10 to 30 THB per trip. You flag them down from the roadside. They are slow and routes are not always obvious to newcomers, but locals use them constantly. A good option for short trips in central Hua Hin.

Motorbike Taxis

Men in orange vests at key junctions and outside shopping areas offer motorbike taxi rides. Quick, cheap, and useful for short distances. Negotiate the fare before getting on. Expect to pay 40 to 100 THB for most journeys within central Hua Hin.

Grab

Grab (the Thai equivalent of Uber) works well in Hua Hin. Fixed prices, clean cars, and door-to-door service. More expensive than songthaews and motorbike taxis but convenient and reliable. A useful option for longer journeys or when you have luggage.

Renting a Motorbike

Renting a motorbike or scooter is the most practical option for many expats. Monthly rental costs around 3,000 to 5,000 THB for a basic scooter. An international driving licence is required. Thailand has a significant road accident rate, drive carefully, always wear a helmet, and be extra cautious on busy roads and in rain.

Renting a Car

Car rental is available from local and international agencies in Hua Hin. Monthly rates for a small car start around 15,000 to 20,000 THB. A valid international driving licence is required. Car ownership is an option for long-term residents, discuss with a local lawyer before purchasing.

See our Car & Motorbike Rental directory for local rental agencies.

Cycling

Hua Hin is relatively flat in the central areas and cycling is popular with expats. Several shops rent and sell bicycles. The coastal road north and south of Hua Hin is particularly good for cycling.

Transport to Bangkok

For trips to Bangkok, minivans (200 to 250 THB, 3 to 3.5 hours) and buses (200 to 280 THB, 3.5 to 4 hours) are the most common options. See the Getting Here guide for full detail.
